And they delayed this update by 6-8 weeks for ... ?

Would/Should we have waited if we knew then what we know now and will know in the future ?
    :(

Probably because they needed to wait for sufficient stocks of the faster merom chips (you don't see many of the 2.3GHz offerings from other manufacturers, either). Now I just have to decide if I want to lug a macpro across the pond or go for a 17" mbp.

    cheers.

I'm very skeptical that the iMacs are coming today(tuesday) there has been no leaked specs/pics of box or anything else, you normally get this before a refresh.

Also iMacs are still shipping in 24hrs on the apple website, a good sign that the new iMacs are not coming just yet.

You're not excited about time machine? Seems like a killer app to me. I've never seen a backup system that looked better implemented. For the huge number of us who don't have a backup system in place but know that we should, that alone makes Leopard worth the price of admission.

This is all very interesting and I can discern the excitement amongst you that have an immediate use for this technology. For me, I am looking forward to a full implementation of Wine, or similar product, which will eliminate the need to load the Windows OS before running Windows programs. I do believe this will truly set OSX free.

Does anyone know if any of the emulators will allow MS Sql Server to run on an Xserve platform? What about Exchange or other backoffice applications?
    Elegant post but sheesh!

The beta is probably floating around the Internets by now, if you know where to look. I can't confirm that directly, but these things do leak fast.Yeah it already is.

He is living his life. I agree with a lot of his "quotes". AA is crap, people are trolling him and he may just be a rockstar from Mars (Lil Wayne is an alien after all). He seems to love his kids and his women do too. What's worse? Someone with an alternative lifestyle that takes care of their kids or someone with a "great lifestyle" that beats them on the side. They look healthy to me.

People are pissed because he stood up and talked out about Chuck and many people (union members, yuck) are out of jobs for now. If they were still getting paid they wouldn't be whining. Also it shows how powerful he is if a whole production is shut down without him. Should he go on for others? I don't think so. He doesn't agree with it and won't do it.

I say go epic on the world Mr. Sheen.

To be honest, I've had more application crashes and restarts on OSX than I have under XP/Windows in the past 3 years. So much for "crash resistant" - and yes, I've had 4 kernel panics since I got this iMac home; that's more than the number of BSODs I've had under XP in 4 years.

Which means -- as everyone is saying -- that there is something wrong with your computer. I have a MacBook, two Intel iMacs, and a Mac Pro in my house, and they do not crash despite heavy daily use. My poor Mac Pro is running three different operating systems right now using Parallels, with nary a complaint. If you are getting unexplained kernel panics on a clean install of Mac OS X, then you have a hardware problem.

Hardware problems can affect any OS -- I've seen Windows systems that get daily BSODs. It's not because "Windows sucks", it's because there was a sub-par memory chip or somesuch in the system. Likewise Mac OS X crashes, when nobody else is experiencing a problem, are not an indication of the stability of the OS but rather of your hardware.

You're quoting me back to me when all of us (including me) were talking about that other guy that is having hardware problems because his Parallels "sucks." Parallels kicks ass on my C2D 20" iMac - hence the reason I piped up to be the first to say something is wrong with the other guy's machine if he can't get it working right.

On mine, which is stock hardware except for the 2GB of RAM I have in it, Parallels starts up in 4 seconds, boots my XP VM in 9-10, shuts down in 3-4, restarts the same VM in under 5 seconds (have yet to figure that one out, probably because of caching someplace; I don't even see the XP splash screen when it reboots/restarts because it's so fast), suspends in 22-25 seconds, resumes in 30-34, and I have no issues with any hardware at all in my XP VM. I even burn CDs and DVDs from the XP VM over FireWire/USB without hassles (Plextor FireWire/USB external).

So, on a similarly configured piece of hardware, if he's having suspend/resume times that seem to be 4-6x longer than others then, as you said, there is something wrong with the hardware. If none of the rest of us are having said issues, your line of logic would follow and apply to his machine since he's the only one reporting such ridiculously long suspend/resume times among other things.

Parallels works for me. Since I can't post specific benchmark data for Parallels and that other new-on-the-scene virtualization software for Macs <hint, hint> I'll just say this:

I completed the testing I said I was going to do, and Parallels simply lays the smackdown across that other software. And yes I'm well aware that other software is in beta - or pre-beta late alpha as one person put it - and that's fine. But I paid for Parallels, and to use that most famous line about Macs:

    It just works.

Oh yeah, it beats that other software even with multi-core CPU support enabled. Go figure.

    bb

Parallels sucks but until now its been the only REAL game in town.

Ah... the clarion call of lamers. Might as well bash Windows since it's so pervasive while you're at it. And it's still no excuse for stealing the software and breaking the faith. Bleh...

I believe this b/c Darlymple and Gruber belies this.

Trouble with all these statements is that they are forgetting that Apple can return WWDC to the software guys

AND then do a media event as soon as the day after and still release in June/July.

The lack of new component shipments could be simply due to the fact that Apple is using components that also appear in existing products and Apple doesn't spell out what the components are being used for when they order them. So what someone might think is just more chips to fill the ipad 2 demand could be only part that and part for a new phone (for example)

    Lol.

Yeah, you know what's best for us users though - so we should be elated that you are resisting support for it tooth and nail.

OR, tell the web designers that iPhone users are interested in their videos and they need to stop using flash.

Don't mean to be a wet blanket, but I didn't care about Apple's market share when it was slipping in the 90s and I don't care about it now that it's climbing. I didn't buy my Mac to be popular and I don't particularly care that lots of people are (or are not) using them. It's just an irrelevant metric to me.
    ...
Besides, Apple deals in the kind of quality that will keep it around for many, many years, regardless of which way its market share is going and that's all that I care about.

You do realize that if Apple's marketshare were to drop to, say, 1% or lower, they would have very little money to spend on R&D, and the quality and innovation you seek would suffer tremendously? Which is why Apple was doing dismally in the 90's and is doing much better today. They are now flush with cash, and can pump out great hardware products, and develop and refine the software that drives sales. Market share (and high margins) is important to ensure a steady flow of cash for those projects.

So, you don't care about how market share affects you, but if you were the only Mac user, I assure you, Apple wouldn't be manufacturing products just for your puny market share. (To make an extreme example)

Furthermore, I have issues with the comments about marketshare increase alone as a primary contributor to getting Macs back into schools. The reason I have a problem with that is that school boards and school superintendants are typically in the back pocket of the IT staffs of the district, and so many of those staffs out there are all MS-heads. Until you can replace those folks (not convert, not convince, but replace) you're hardly likely to see much penetration into the educational market.
I'm the techie guy at an elementary school and 99.9% of all the computers in the district (not just my school, the entire district) are Macs. The last director of technology was really pro-Mac, along w/ a lot of the other schools' techies, which was a good thing. However, the kindergarten teacher @ my school has some peecees which she got on a grant to run some Windows only software (but didn't get them set-up since, according to the last director of technology, didn't fit into the district's technology plans). Also, each techie is getting a MacBook w/ dual boot because we're going to a new program that rates how well the kids to in reading & math where you can see the progress online, but the only way you can upload the results is on Windows. Boo!!! That's one reason why Macs still have low marketshare: no programs. It's a chicken & the egg problem. Mac marketshare won't go significantly up until more software is ported, but not very much software will be ported until mac marketshare is up.

One problem with increased market share is that there will be more attacks on them. One of the Mac's sources of security is security through obscurity. So, why go after an OS that only has 5% marketshare while another OS has 90%? I don't know whether Windows or Macs are more secure in terms of actual bugs and security holes, but we probably would if Windows & Macs get equal marketshare.

There are two main reasons that I know of to hack into computers, write viruses, or something: (1) to gain entry to a computer to get files, damage the company's infrastructure or (2) to be a jackass. The first one is probably for personal gain and Macs may be a target, the second to make yourself feel good at other people's expense and would probably be Windows-based to inflict the most damage. Anyone want to add something, be my guest.

Apple would get slaughtered if it entered the TV market. In order to compete with the big boys apple needs to actually own facilities that manufacture flat panels unless it wants to compete on the bottom end with vizio at walmart.

Even more entertaining is the fact that Apple is so arrogant they fail to realize how stupid they look.

    Suing their biggest vendor.

It doesn't get any more stupid than that.

The only stupid thing Apple did was to not realize that other companies are copying their designs left and right. Samsung has always been the worst of all. They copy everything. It is in their nature to do so. Look at everything they make. It is all a copycat in one form or another.

    Yes, reserved now.

However look 2 years out. If back in the day MacWorld Expo could get North and South then Apple should not have a problem with getting 2 or more of the building as well.

Two years ago WWDC took weeks to sell out. Why would Apple want to spend a ton more to reserve a much larger facility at that slow rate?

I wonder if these events will start doing something to limit scalping? What could they do?

No doubt, I like nice things too and have my selection of vainness in my closet (diamond Gucci watch, LV messenger bag/wallets/etc) but when it comes to clothes, sure I'll spend $100 on a nice collared shirt or nice jeans or something, but $250 is just too far for me personally--shirts DO wear out for me after only a year or two. Sure they look good and still feel fine--until you buy a new one and have a fresh snug one to compare it to--then the old one just feels like junky crap that has lost its form over the last year or two, at least for me. Don't get me wrong, I don't buy/can't stand crappy cheap clothes, all my stuff is upper-end, but there's a personal limit where the value just isn't there for the money on short term clothes--I switch stuff out every couple years as styles/tastes change anyway.

Hey bruv, I completely get what you're saying and I no way doubt your usage/taste; its just what works for me- as you say, you may switch looks while I've looked the same for years so yeah cost/value will be as different as taste. I've been a trouser/shirt man for basically ever (wont and haven't worn jeans since a lad, leather soles and 100% natural all the way ever then) and rock the scruffy side of louche so am quite happy to be wearing 5 year linen on my back (also find it hangs better with time and that fresh paper feel is only an iron away).

Personally theres no way I'd justify spending money to make myself look different (re: flitting scenesters) but am always amazed at how different threads change your behaviour (shoes and trousers definitely on the stride/ jacket on the bearing &c.)

Hey, btw anybody after any nods I don't think you could do better to see where Prince Charles and the Duke of Windsor do their shopping (not a comment on the monarchy rather where a dandy without limit chooses to go:D)

As a Mac fan-boy I'd love to think Apple actually picked up sustainable market share, but as an actual technology product manager who does forecasts for a living, I've got to look askew at the data:

    * Mac market share was DOWN the previous quarter

    * The attributed cause of the share drop the previous quarter was the transition to Intel

    * Therefore the previous quarter share drop represented pent-up demand that would rematerialize once the Intel transition stabilized

    * Therefore one would expect a corresponding one-time blip UP in the corresponding quarter to resolve the pent-up demand

    * And low and behold, the marketshare "increase" just about corresponds to the resolution of the previous quarter's pent-up demand.

In other words, to keep the same long-term share, the current quarter's share would have to temporarily rise to make-up for last quarter's drop.

Sorry, amigos, I'll wait to see next quarter's data before I pop the cork...
